The Origins of Thai Traditional Massage

Thai Traditional Massage is believed to have originated more than 2,500 years ago in ancient India.
It is traditionally associated with Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (known in Thailand as Shivago Komarpaj), a respected physician who is said to have been the personal doctor of Gautama Buddha. As Buddhism spread throughout Asia, medical knowledge and healing practices from India were introduced to Thailand.
Over the centuries, these traditions evolved within Thailand and incorporated influences from yoga, acupressure, and local healing techniques. This gradual development gave rise to what is now known as Thai Traditional Massage—a unique therapy that combines stretching, rhythmic pressure, and mindful movement to promote relaxation and overall well-being.
At Kintsugi Spa, we offer a modern interpretation of Thai-inspired stretching massage performed on a comfortable Western-style massage bed rather than a traditional floor mat. Gentle stretches and flowing techniques help release tension, improve flexibility, and leave the body feeling refreshed and re-energized.
Whether you are recovering from jet lag, taking a break between sightseeing adventures, or looking for the perfect way to conclude your journey, a session at Kintsugi Spa is an ideal way to restore balance and enjoy a moment of deep relaxation during your stay in Fukuoka.
